Google Slides User Manual

Introduction

Keynote and Powerpoint get all the press in presentations. On the other hand, tech analysts often mention Google Docs as an alternative to Microsoft Word. While hundreds of tips exist on how to install Google Sheet App, bloggers barely mention Google Slides. It is unfair since the platform is one of the best free online presentation tools.

Getting Started

Google Slides is a part of Google Docs. The flagship online application software is accessible by signing up for a Google account. Given that it is a free web app, Google Slides lacks most of the features such as those in Keynote or Microsoft PowerPoint. Still, the collaboration inbuilt features make up for the lack of aesthetic characteristics. In addition, full-featured desktop application software has higher learning curve than Google Slides since the developers focused on the most crucial features.

Creation of a New Presentation

After sign-up, head to Google Drive and click Create-Presentation to get started. The move will redirect you to a blank presentation page.

Presentation Format

The initial step in generating a presentation entails a configuration of looks. Hence, the user should Select a theme from a pop up window. Google Slides has more than 20 inbuilt themes that are freely accessible. However, they are not aesthetically gratifying as those found in the latest Prezi version.  Nonetheless, their wide sections enhance Google Slides’ functionality and ability to accommodate all sorts of presentations.

The Google client can access hundreds of additional themes by clicking in The Use this template icon on the Template Gallery. The move creates a novel presentation outfit with a chosen theme.

Moreover, Google gives its customers an option of uploading a theme through the Import Theme button, but should not be more than 50 megabytes.
After the selection of a theme, use the drop down Slide size menu to determine the aspect ratio (Windscreen 16: 10, Standard4: 3, or Windscreen 16: 10). It is imperative to choose an aspect ratio that fits the presentation screen.

Confirm your theme choice and aspect ratio by clicking Ok on the dialogue box. I recommend a16: 9 aspect ratio and The Paper Plane theme. In case the user wants to change the theme, he has to revisit and click on the Theme button. The move prompts him to rename the presentation. Thereafter, the client can click on the Untitled presentation icon on the left side of the screen and change the name on the Rename document frame. Press Ok or cancel when done.

Navigation

Google slides have numerous striking similarities with most windows apps. For instance, on the left-hand side, there is a sidebar that displays the slides the user has created. On the other hand, the screen’s body has a slide that a presenter is working on.

Often, the first slide bears a title for the presentation. Therefore, the user can add a title by clicking Add a Title. Below the heading, there is a section to for a subtitle.

During text selection, various options appear on the toolbar. Use the icons on the screen’s left side to edit the textbox appearance. For example, the presenter can add borders, colors or chance the text appearance.

Deleting and Adding Slides

Clicking on the + button on the screen’s left-hand side adds new slides with Body and Title layout.

On the contrary, the user can remove unwanted slides by right-clicking on Edit button, and double-click on the Delete icon.

Adding Information

The second slide will have information. It has a heading and a text section for editing and additional formatting. The presenter reveals the text options by clicking on the body text box and additional text specifications. In this way, it is possible to create a bulleted list.

Google Slides has an inbuilt plug-in for researching the presentation topic. It is accessible through Tools then Research button. Additionally, it incorporates Google search engine for accessing images, videos, and articles from Google Scholar.

Adding Media

Others slides require media elements. If this is the case, the presenter should modify the default layout by clicking the arrow button.
I recommend the caption layout for posting images and videos. Notably, the Layout button in the toolbar is usable in altering or restoring the slide appearance. There are two ways of inserting images. The user can click on Insert then Image buttons. Otherwise, he can select the Image toolbar button.  Photos and videos can be uploaded from Google Dive or the hard drive. Alternatively, the presenter has an option of retrieving stock photos from websites.

Addition of Animations

Google Slides has inbuilt animations to enhance the presentation and slide transition. Clicking on the Transition toolbar button reveals the Animations sidebar for customization. On the other hand, the Slide menu monitors the animations from one slide to the other, for instance, it slows or fastens the transition time.

For easier transition application in all slides, the presenter can select the Apply to all slides on the sidebar as shown in the diagram. Animation of individual objects on slides is not only possible but also easy. Right-clicking on the object reveals a drop-down menu, where the app user can select Add Animation option.

Collaboration

Given that Google Slides is a web app, users can collaborate with the online community to work on a presentation in real time irrespective of geographical location.

Presentation

The client can present his work by clicking the Present button. For remote presentation, the file is transferable as a .pptx through File--|Download As|--Microsoft Power Point|.
